The Walking Dead: Just Survive Somehow
Alexandria under attack by The Wolves, Carol showing her true colors again, and the struggle for humanity vs. survival is real.
The second episode to season 6 of The Walking Dead did not disappoint fans. The episode rightfully titled, “Just Survive Somehow” packed in action and suspense last seen when the Governor stormed the prison back in season 3.
In the first 10 minutes of the episode, we learn more about Enid’s past and how she came to Alexandria. Enid is a true survivor, watching her parents being eaten alive after being surprised by more than “Just a few” walkers. She journeys in the woods of Virginia, stumbling on walkers and using survival skills to keep alive. Writing JSS [later revealed to mean “Just Survive Somehow”] at every stop she made through her journey, finally seeking refuge at Alexandria.
Alexandria comes under attack by The Wolves. Carol is first to spot the attack, watching from the window in the Grimes group home. Spotting a member of Alexandria getting hacked and stabbed repeatedly by an intruder. Quick to act she instructs Carl to stay with Judith and protect her at all cost.
Carol is by the far the strongest member of Rick’s group, showcasing her ability to be a leader and protect her community. This episode showed the growth of Carol as a character, reminding viewers and fans of her beginnings. Talking about the ‘Spring Cleaning Casseroles ‘ she used to make her late husband, Earl, Carol has come along way from being the domestically abused and doting wife that lost her only daughter to the apocalypse.
Carol has transformed into a strong survivor, someone that has adapted to the cruelty of the apocalypse. A highlighting scene is the reveal of Carol dressed as one of The Wolves after saving Morgan from an attack. Donning a “W” on her forehead, a hooded trench coat and handkerchief over her mouth, Carol walks around Alexandria, toting Morgan as prisoner to fool other Wolves. After she releases Morgan to save Father Gabriel, Carol goes on a rampage killing Wolves on her way to protect the armory.
Morgan struggles with Carol’s ideals of survival, killing a Wolves member in front of him before getting vital information. Morgan believes that all human life matters and killing another human being goes against his philosophy. This philosophy is put to the test after his physical altercation with a Wolf, telling Morgan, “You can’t do it [kill me], can you?”
Alexandria lost many of it’s members, will they be able to recover from a loss. Alexandria will soon face more trouble ahead, as the hoard of walkers make their way, after the semi-trunk horn drew their attention to the community. In the last few minutes of the episode, Aaron discovers photos in a fallen Wolves backpack of Alexandria. Confirming that this is not a random attack, The Wolves have been spying on Alexandria and waited for a vulnerable time to make their move.
