The Walking Dead 6×13 “The Same Boat”

I want to start with a warning! If you are not caught up on The Walking Dead then: A) What’s wrong with you go catch up! and B) This is going to contain spoilers so you better stop reading!

The episode back tracks to the pervious, but shows how Maggie and Carol get captured. Carol and Maggie get in a bit of a disagreement about whether or not Maggie should be out there now that she is pregnant. In Maggie’s mind, she is doing the right thing by being there, holding up her end of the bargain. Carol believes Maggie should be back in Alexandria out of harms way. Once the siren goes off at the Savior compound, Maggie is determined to go and help the crew. Shortly after, they are attacked by a group of Saviors led by Paula (Alicia Witt) a character you love to hate.twd0613-0441They watch Rick and the gang take out one of her men named Primo but before Rick kills him she talks to Rick through Primo’s walkie, telling Rick to drop the gun and that she has a Maggie and Carol. Rick immediately wants to negotiate. Paula tells him she will contact him with further instructions and covers Maggie and Carol’s faces so they can’t see where they are taking them.

Upon arrival, Carol gets her hands on a rosary from a walker that Paula kills. We learn more about these people, and they learn it was Rick’s people who blew up the group of Saviors on the road; including a boyfriend of one of the captors.

We learn that Paula has lost a lot, (just like every person) in the zombie apocalypse including her daughters and husband. She wasn’t with them due to her arrogant boss, and she tells us he was the first person she killed. She also tells us that once she hit the double digits with her kills, she no longer felt a thing.

She believes Carol is weak, based on the appearance of this horrified, teary eyed Carol. At one point to get her gag removed, Carol begins to hyperventilate she also reaches for the rosary in her pocket that one of her captors gets out and gives her, saying she is one of “those” referring to one that believes in God. (I must say I honestly couldn’t tell if Carol was faking or not) Once they removed the gag she tells them not to hurt the baby, no doubt trying to save Maggie. You can tell this affects Chelle one of the captors, but not Paula, who goes on to say what kind of idiot would get knocked up in a time like this, but Maggie defends herself and her reasons for wanting to have a baby.

At one point, Donny the male that was shot in the arm by Carol (before they took them hostage) got up and was tired of keeping Carol alive. He begins beating Carol. Maggie tries to protect Carol by attacking him even though she was bound. He then turns and comes after Maggie, and that’s when he is then knocked out by Paula and he collapses to the floor.

After that happened, Paula decides to have Chelle interrogate Maggie and she is taken to a separate room (which is when we learned she used to be pregnant). Paula continuously asks how Carol has made it this far stating that she is just too weak. (well played Carol)

Carol tells Paula,” You will die. That’s what’s going to happen to you if you don’t work this out.”

“Are you going to kill me?” Paula asks.

“I hope not,” Carol replies.

Definitely my favorite line from Carol.

Rick contacts Paula asking if she is ready to negotiate. She is smart and  realizes that Rick and his gang must be close due to there being no static on the walkie. Paula tells her other crew member, that they need to scout the area and clear out some of the walkers, telling her they must be close.

Now is when the heart pounding intensity begins! Paula and Molly, another of her crew members, leave to scout the new compound, giving Carol her opportunity to become that badass Carol that we all love. She sharpens the cross on her rosary and cuts through the duct tape that has her hands bound. She spots Molly and sneaks past. She finds Maggie and they make their way back to the room they were being held in. Maggie tells Carol they have to kill them, that there is no other way and that they need a gun. Donny is now dead on the ground from blood loss, giving the ladies a very interesting plan. They tie him to a post near the door, and when Molly comes back she is bitten by  him. While she is distracted, Maggie takes her out in a bit of a psychotic rampage.twd0613-2634

You can clearly see Carol is having  a crisis of conscious as she watches Maggie demolish Molly. Then Carol and Maggie make their way to a hall where Paula and her crew set up a people deterrent using walkers.

Maggie and Carol make their way through this walker deterrent only to be stopped by Paula (in my mind I was screaming, shoot her Carol! Shoot her!), and, after a brief confrontation, Carol shoots her and she falls to the ground. Then Chelle grabs Maggie and slashes at her belly. Carol comes around the corner and shoots her in the head. They head back to the corridor and Paula is leaning against the wall, basically telling Carol that she did good and was played by the “little bird”. She stands and asks Carol what she is so afraid of and Carol replies, “this.” As she points the gun at Paula. Paula comes at her and there is a bit of a heart pounding struggle, but it ends with Paula being impaled by a spike and then eaten by the walker that was on the spike behind her.

Carol lures the other saviors that Paula was communicating with by using a walkie and tells them to meet them in the “kill room”. When they arrive, she lights a cigarette and tosses it into the box that the saviors are in, setting them on fire as she locks the door.

As Maggie and Carol open the door to leave, there is Rick and the crew. Daryl embraces Carol asking her if she is good, in which she replies “no”.twd0613-3224

Glen goes to Maggie and asks if she is okay, in which she stutters, “I… I can’t anymore.”twd0613-3245

Rick turns to Primo and tells him that all his people are dead. Then asks him if Negan was there last night or even here? Primo responds, “both,” and without hesitation Rick shoots him in the head. (That takes me back to a moment when Carol and Maggie were still held hostage. Carol tells them that they killed their people in hopes of killing Negan. Molly tells them that they are all Negan.)

So anyone with a brain can see that though they killed a lot of people, the odds are they didn’t actually kill Negan.

Another thing I pondered was when Paula asked Carol what she was so afraid of, was Carol actually referring to shooting Paula and adding another kill? Or could it have perhaps been more of Carol not ever wanting to be like Paula, in the sense of losing her humanity?
