Teen Wolf Star Arden Cho Bids Farewell

From Crystal Reed, Tyler Hoechiln, Gage Golightly, Sinqua Walls, Colton Haynes, Daniel Sharman, Keahu Kahuanni and Adelaide Kane, Teen Wolf has seen their fair share of exits from the hit series. We now face another cast member leaving the series, maybe this time not by choice. Arden Cho announces she will not be returning for Season 6.

Teen Wolf fans have felt the heartache of cast members discussions to leave the series. The 31 year old actress, Crystal Reed chose to leave the show to pursue more age appropriate roles and expand her horizons from playing a high school teenager. A respected discussion was had by the show producers and the cast to give her character, Allison Argent, closure. The same went for Tyler Hoechilin, after starring in indie films and rediscovering his passion for acting. Despite Allison Argent’s death in the series, Jeff Davis has left Derek Hale’s (Tyler Hoechilin) storyline open in hopes of a possible cameo in the upcoming season. However, looks like the first half of Season 6 will be without the Beacon Hill’s ‘Grumpy Wolf.’

The exploration to expand one’s acting horizon may be one of the reasons for a cast member’s exit from the show. However, there is another reason that proves to be the ultimate offender: the dreaded casting of another show. Colton Haynes was casted as Roy Harper in the hit CW series Arrow and his character Jackson Whittemore was written off completely after season 2 to be in England. Gage Gohlightly was casted as a main actress in a CW show that never made it past the pilot and her character, Erica Reyes was killed off. Adelaide Kane plays Queen Mary in the hit series Reign on CW and had her character Cora Hale written off as well, but this time to South America. Sinqua Walls had his character Boyd Vernon killed off in Season 3a and later went on to reprise his role as Lancelot in the hit series Once Upon a Time on ABC. Daniel Sharman was casted in the CW hit series The Originals and landed films outside of the supernatural realm. His scarf werewolf counterpart, Isaac Lahey, was sent to Paris after Season 4 and remains there for now. So in short it seems that cast members that are casted into another television series suffer the fate of their character simply being killed or written off to a distant foreign land.

There is another explanation for a character exit, one that is frowned upon in the fandom community, and that is the “write off!” This has not been seen in Teen Wolf since a fan favorite and first gay character of the series, Danny Mahealani (portrayed by Keahu Kahuanni), was simply written out of Beacon Hills after Season 3a. Fans still ask Jeff Davis to bring Danny back at just about every con. However, the outlook is grim as we have yet to see Keahu on set to reprise his role. Also there is the fact that Mason Hewitt is now the resident gay character in Beacon Hills in hopes to calm the backlash of Teen Wolf writing out a gay character.

The “write off” of a character seemed like it would stay in the past for avid fans of the show. That is until April 11, 2016 when a video was posted by Arden Cho to her  YouTube channel. The video made its way through social media quickly and started a social media uproar. Arden Cho, who gave the fiery Kitsune Kira Yukimura life from Season 3b, informed fans that she will not be returning as Kira for Season 6, and that the storyline for Kira is completed. Arden goes on to say, “I think sometimes in a show where there’s so many characters, there isn’t always room for everyone.” She then continues: “I do wish we would’ve developed a little bit more of her powers and the Skinwalkers.” We can’t agree more.  We feel like Kira’s storyline was just beginning to develop, despite the rumors floating around of her being forced out from the show. We now believe those rumors to be true after watching her farewell video, in which Arden clearly is smiling through the tears of having her character written off from the show and saying goodbye to Teen Wolf (seen in the video below).

Teen Wolf has given another strong female character an incredible injustice, and we hope we will get to see her again in the future. Whether it is back on Teen Wolf for the series finale, on her YouTube channel, making music or landing roles in the television and film industry, Arden Cho is not finished spreading her talent, music and smile with everyone.
