Teen Wolf 5×06 Recap: Required Reading
Chimeras are on the loose in Beacon Hills, a young Lydia, Scott and Stiles, the reveal of Claudia Stilinski, and plenty of sexual tension brewing to leave fans wanting another double shot.
Episode six kicks of with a opening sequence between Scott, Malia, Melissa and one of the Dread Doctors at Beacon Hills Hospital. Malia continues to show her strength and powers, taking on a Dread Doctor on her own, to allow Melissa an opportunity to rescue Scott. Malia has had considerable character development since season 4. Going from a werecoyote, who made it clear she was one to take care of herself before the pack, to a fighter and one of the packs strongest members, Malia is finally allowed growth in the writing. She is no longer just a plug in for a love interest for Stiles, but is now turning into individual character with more depth.
Theo seems to be the king in this game of chess with the pack. Knowing the vision Malia had in the previous episode of her mother, the dessert wolf, he toys with the werecoyote during an exercise scene, where he nonchantly begins to work out without no shirt. Malia had sought Theo out to question him about her choice not to tell Scott and Stiles about her vision of the Dessert Wolf, only to be distracted by Theo’s washboard abs.
Malia is not the only one holding secrets in the pack. Stiles continues to keep quiet about the whereabouts of Donavon. Given more then ample opportunity to speak up to his father, Malia, Scott and Lydia about Donovan’s death, he continues to keep the secret to himself.
This is something Theo caught onto when Malia confronted Stiles about the smell of blood, and he saw Stiles wince in pain. Theo is quick to use the news as leverage on Stiles, after Theo killed a chimera to save Stiles, which is a smart ploy to keep Stiles in his back pocket.
Scott, being the True Alpha with a moral compass, easily allows Theo to join in the daunting task of helping him track down the chimeras that could be lurking on campus. Theo is slowly making his move into the pack. In this episode we see Scott confiding in Theo about Kira, and his concerns about not being able to trust her. This comes after Theo reveals to Scott that, while Kira was asleep after a long night of reading from “The Dread Doctors” book, he heard Kira talking in her sleep in Japanese, translating the repeated phrase to, “I am the messenger of death.” The question looming this season is, what is happening to Kira? Is what Theo translated accurate or another ploy in his plan?
This season also introduced some fresh faces. One such fresh face, and a new fan favorite is Hayden. Revealed this episode, fans finally found out exactly what happened in the sixth grade between Hayden and Liam. Mason discloses the story to Brett while observing the two in question in a competition of skills. Mason goes on to tell the story about how Liam accidently punched Hayden in the face, and in return, Hayden decided to pay the favor back. Mason then shows Brett a photo of both Hayden and Liam with matching broken noses. This duo is a fan favorite because their interaction with each other is fun to watch, and one can hope that they will kiss and makeup soon.
Lastly, the episode highlights were the flashback of memories of younger versions of Lydia, Scott and Stiles. With Lydia, we are only able to see the back of her head, and red flats making their way down the halls of Eichen House. Red can be observed in this episode as having symbolic meaning, whether as a tool to tie in the importance of a scene, or prelude to scenes come.
We see Lydia standing at the door way, watching her Mother shouting to her grandmother in a tub. There is blood and a drill on the floor. The camera zooms in on her grandmother’s head. There the viewer is quick to see a hole drilled into her skull. Lydia stands at the door while her mother continues to shout, “I told you to wait in the car.” Lydia, never one to listen, is quickly drawn to her grandmother, and is told “They’re coming, Lydia. They’re coming for all of us.” This same line is heard in the promos for Teen Wolf, and one can speculate the voice to be Lydia’s. Is this a prelude of things to come?
Viewers were delighted to see a young Scott, but sadly not to great circumstances. We see a young Scott on a stretcher, being rolled into Beacon Hills hospital due to an asthma attack, after his pet dog Roxy was mauled by another dog. While this vision is being played out, present-day Scott starts to have an asthma attack, something that was cured once he became a werewolf. This theme has been seen in previous seasons, where Scott suffers, or what he feels is, an asthma attack. Usually, he quickly returns back to himself. Will this not be the case for him now?
Stiles experiences his flashback in the form of seeing a woman, reflected on the panels of the elevator doors. He follows her out onto a roof top where he calls out to the woman as “Mom.” Viewers are finally given the treat of meeting Claudia Stilinski, something that fans have wanted since season 1.
Viewers see Claudia standing at the ledge of the hospital, until coaxed down by Sheriff Stilinski. Claudia was revealed to have dementia in season 3B, and fans see the disease in the worse state. Claudia insists that Stiles is trying to kill her, then looks to him. “Don’t look at me like that,” She yells out, in which a confused Stiles looks to his mother, and catches his shadow in a childish form. He is later attacked by his mother, until woken up from the vision by a chimeria on top of him.
There are so many unanswered questions from this episode. Is the club the corporate in assisting the Dread Doctors to create their chimeras? In order not to be a failure, do the chimeras have to have surgical history? Who will Stiles confide his secret with first? I guess we will find out, hopefully by the end of 5A.
