Siren: Not Your Little Mermaid Story
There has always been a deep fascination around the mythological world of mermaids. Freeform is riding that wave with their own mermaid series, “Siren,” and let’s just say this show is not your typical little mermaid series.
“Siren” surrounds the mermaid obsessed town of Bristol Cove. In Bristol Cove there are two opposing communities that make up the coastal the town: the fishermen and the environmentalist. Cue the founding family of Bristol Cove, The Pownalls, and the “Prince Eric” of the series, Ben Pownall (Alex Roe). After a mysterious catch by a crew of fisherman and the attack on one of their men, an even more ominous government agency descends on the crew’s boat. They extract the precious cargo (a siren) along with the injured crewmember.
The government agency takes the siren back to their lab where they conduct experiments and extract spinal fluid as well as keeping the injured crewmember in a makeshift hospital room in the middle of the laboratory. All of this seems fishy and we have yet to learn what this government agency is up to.
Back at Bristol Cove, Ben nearly runs over a woman in the middle of the road. He offers to get her medical treatment and a place to crash. After the mysterious woman sneaks away, he finds her later at the Bristol Cove Marine Research Center. Once again he offers help in finding medical treatment for her ailment and learns her supposed name, Ryn. However, once again Ryn gives him the slip (a slip into the cove) and takes on her siren form once in the water.
Ben notices the something on the underwater cameras and catches a glimpse of Ryn (Eline Powell). Without much thought, Ben jumps into the water where he is attacked by Ryn and has to fight her off to save his life. Once back on land, Ben goes on the search for answers that lead him to his friend, Xander (who was a crewmember on the boat that captured the other siren) and the town’s local folklore expert, Helen Hawkins (Rena Owens). Ben is certain that Ryn is a siren and that his friend’s crew also encountered one as well.
Ben acquires a stolen sonar device from his friend and brings it back to Helen for answers. Ryn goes on the attack to obtain the device as she believes her sister is inside the sonar device. Ben and Helen piece together that the noise is the cry of Ryn’s sister and they enlist the help of his girlfriend, Maddie Bishop (Fola Evans-Akingbola) to help Ryn find her sister. However, there may be obstacles in the way as Maddie’s father (the town Sherriff) found the body of a man that we know was killed by Ryn, and Ben’s family has a dark history of siren genocide.
