Sham MTV!

If I had to pick a low light of my four day experience at San Diego Comic-Con 2015,  I believe the MTV booth would be on the top of my list.

San Diego Comic-Con is a four day event, if one excludes preview night. As most devoted Comic-Con goers know there are tons of free swag that are given out during the event. I found myself content with the amount of swag given out this year, . However, there was one particular booth that made my exhibit halls experience less then enjoyable, and that was MTV’s booth this year.

I had been around the exhibit floor all four days of the con, and would make my routine stop at the MTV booth. I was excited to see the Teen Wolf, Scream, Shannara Chronicles, and SDCC swag they were giving out (but mainly the Teen Wolf posters and Alpha contacts). I was told on numerous occasions by the staff there that they had nothing more to give out at the time, and to check back, which I did, only to turn up short handed.

So on the last day, I was more then determined to get my hands on the exclusive Teen Wolf posters and contacts that were being handed out. I followed the crowd as Con goers lined up around the booth in hopes for a giveaway. One of the staff members asked for us to leave, and proclaimed that the booth “Had nothing to give out and nothing in stock to give.” When Just that morning I had witnessed a Shannara book and Shannara sword being given out.

As no one had moved, I decided to stay in line with my cousin, and wait it out. That same worker got upset that the line of 15 people had not left, and called security, in which the security guard threatened to take down our badge numbers. Mind you that the crowd was not rowdy, and consisted of parents with small children.

In fear that out badge numbers would be written down, we decided to walk around the exhibit hall, and check back in with the MTV booth. We had seen the line form again, and got in line after another security guard informed us to stay close to the booth and out the aisle, in which we did as we were instructed. After twenty minutes, the previous security guard came back, went back through the line, and threatened us again stating, “That he was asked to remove us!.”  Remove us from where exactly? From the exhibit hall for taking direction from another security guard?

Once again we dispersed in fear, and walked around the exhibit hall. After a long day of circling around to check for Teen Wolf swag, we ended up empty handed. I have never felt so defeated with a booth over the three years of attending Comic-Con. I’ve also never been so disrespected by a booth at Comic-Con, and I hope MTV next year will learn from the veteran booths on how to hand out swag properly, like Lionsgate and Legend. They were giving out posters and swag items consistently through out the day. The security guards, knowing their routine, respectfully handled the crowd, and Con goers left their booth content with what they had received.

If I can suggest anything to MTV for Comic-Con, it would be to learn from the bigger booths, and to do a list a times for the giveaway items. For those fans that love Teen Wolf (like myself) they can come to the booth to get their paws on the swag. While the others that were waiting in that line for the chairs or other swag could go to the random giveaway time slots.
