“The Powers That Be,” was a fitting title to the Malec-centric episode. This episode digs into the past of Magnus Bane and the world of Warlocks. We meet The New High Warlock of Brooklyn, Lorenzo Rey (Javier Muñoz)at a lavish mansion party. Magnus attends the party with Alec Lightwood to show face despite Magnus’s underwhelming desire to be there. Shortly after Malec make their arrival, demonic powers crash the inauguration. This leaves Magnus to save the soiree, and later leads Lorenzo to accuse Magnus of sabotaging his party by working alongside The Greater Demon Asmodeus.
Alec overhears the exchange between the two Warlocks and questions Magnus about his relationship to Asmodeus. Magnus confides in Alec that Asmodeus is, in fact, his father (dun, dun, dun). Asmodeus is one of the few demons that can corrupt the ley lines. His demonic energy signal is similar to Lilith’s as they are both from Edom. Hence the confusion by Magnus of his father’s “return” and the attack on the Warlocks of Brooklyn. However there is more to Asmodeus than Magnus has divulged to Alec. Perhaps the former Warlock of Brooklyn is not ready to drop his family parentage to his shadowhunter boyfriend (Alec) that his father is The Prince of Hell.
