Shadowhunters: Highlights from 2×11 “Mea Maxima Culpa”

Shadowhunters is back in action! Some of the Angels are facing their personal demons while others  are discovering new demons on the horizon that have a few tricks up their sleeves. Here are my highlights  from episode 11,”Mea Maxima Culpa.”

Personal Demons

Episode 11 picks up where the mid-season finale left off. Jace feels guilt of being the cause of the downworlders massacre despite knowing that Valentine’s lie played a huge part in the diabolical plan to enact the Mortal Sword. Jace struggles to tell Clary the that he is not the son of Valentine and therefore they have no biological relationship. Alec teases Jace about telling Clary despite her fresh relationship with Simon.

Unable to tell Clary on his own, the worst pretend father of the year, Valentine, decides to tell Clary the truth.  This leaves Clary in a state of shock and disbelief, and she is unsure if she can trust her father’s words. Knowing that Valentine is a manipulative liar, she looks to Jace and sees the shaken expression on his face. This confirms to Clary that she is not related to Jace. In the end, she request that Jace allow her time to process the news and that they will “Figure things out.”

Another Shadowhunter dealing with their personal demon is Isabelle Lightwood. She struggles with her addiction to Yin Fen, and her body tries to fight off the poisonous venom. It leaves her in a distressed and sickening state. Isbabelle finds herself unable to shake the side effects of her addiction and looks for Raphael to help her. He refuses to give her a bite and sends her on her way.

Isabelle begins to look for any willing vampire to fuel her Yin Fen addiction. However, she runs into the newest demon in town, Azazel. Azazel is the Prince of Hell who is killing those in his wake that disrupt his mission for The Mortal Cup. Lucky for Isabelle a shadowhunter appears in time to save her. Her salvation being: Sebastian a English institute Shadowhunter that has gone A-Wall to kick his own Yin Fen addiction.

Sebastian offers his aid to help Isabelle fight her addiction. He offers his home to her and assistance.  Hasn’t Isabelle learned to stop taking elixars from handsome men? I have my suspicions about pretty boy Sebastian and, knowing that the show has derailed from the books, I am curious to know just how Sebastian will play out on the show adaptation.

Demons Arise

With Azazel on the lose in the Shadowhunter world, it was only a mater of time before the demon would pull some tricks out of his sleeve. The Prince of Hell may have the ability to kill a room full of people with the snap of his fingers, but its the ability to body swap has me reeling.

During an attempt from the Shadowhunter clan to save Isabelle from what they believe was Azazel, They summon the demon and Magnus is unable to keep the demon Prince at bay. Breaking the barrier, he is able to compromise Clary, Jace, Alec, Magnus and Valentine. Azazel decides to give some payback to the warlock by switching his body with Valentine. I can’t wait to see how this will play out in the next episode as Valentine is clearly disgusted to be a downworlder.
