Shadow Hunters VS Mortal Instruments
Where to begin with this one. I suppose I should warn you of the spoilers that will be in this article. I read the book The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare a couple years ago, and I immersed myself into this night world and found that I truly enjoyed it. I was so excited to see the movie, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones starring Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower. I actually really loved the movie. I thought the cinematography was fantastic and once I saw it I thought the actors they picked were perfect (I didn’t care about Clary’s hair not being the right shade of red.) Also I have to say I hated Simon in the book, but found that I loved him in the movie who was played by Robert Sheehan. I had high hopes for this movie to be a successful. Unfortunately, it didn’t gross enough when it hit theaters so it’s life span quickly came to an end. True fans were furious and petitions were sent to Constantin Film to make the sequal City of Ashes. When it was announced that they would make a television series, more petitions were sent asking them to keep the original cast from the movie. Obviously they did not listen seeing as the entire cast is different.
Now fans of the books I fear may hate the changes that were made in the first episode of Shadow Hunters. I have to say I was taken by surprise with how quickly they moved things along. I feel that for a person who has not read the books, there may be a little too much too soon, and almost all at once.
I am trying to be optimistic about this T.V series. Even though they made a lot of changes, I’m hoping the changes were made to add a little more to the story seeing as how it is now a television series. I am also hoping the acting improves as the show progresses (which is possible). Clary (Katherine McNamara) fell a little flat for me, and I felt that Jace (Dominic Sherwood) needs to deliver more of his cocky, in love with himself attitude and be more believable while doing it.
I was pretty upset that they had already introduced Valentine (Alan Van Sprang). I felt that there needed to be more suspense as to who Valentine is, and what he looked like and what he is seeking.
Also, the modernized institute bugged me. I may just be being whinny, but I really loved the dusty dark institute with very few people living there, rather than this high tech facility that they are using in the show.
Also whats with Luke being a detective… I mean okay maybe it will work in the show, but I don’t really know how to feel about this yet. I suppose I am just going to have to keep watching this show to see where it leads.
Lastly, those Seraph Blades were just bad, they looked like plastic light up swords you buy at a children’s store. I hope they improve them, because they just look terrible.
Well that is going to be all my rambling about the show vs. movie vs. book. I will remain optimistic, because I do always appreciate books and games I love that are turned into movies and shows.
I am always interested in hearing other opinions, let me know what your thoughts were between, the book, movie and television series in the comments below!
