Spoilers ahead! read at your own risk!

Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara) is a talented art student whose life drastically changes on her 18th birthday. Her mother Jocelyn (Maxim Roy) gifts Clary a “family heirloom”(which is a Stele, a tool to draw runes on a shadow hunters body), but Clary obviously has no idea. Jocelyn keeps urging Clary to stay home so they can discuss some personal matters, but Clary, being a young women, has plans to go see her best friend Simon (Alberto Rosende) play a show. It doesn’t take much persuasion but Clary is allowed to go out, Joclyn allows her to go telling her close friend Luke (Isaiah Mustafa) who is also concerned that she should have one more normal night.

After Simon’s show, which makes it clear Simon is head over heals for Clary, Clary has a chance meeting with Jace, a dashing Shadowhunter who is in the middle of a chasing a demon. He is surprised that she can see him due to a rune he had marked himself with making him invisible to the human eye. This leaves Simon and their friend thinking Clary is just talking to herself.

Clary is intrigued by this mysterious tattooed guy, and decides to follow him into a club. She is noticed by Magnus a warlock who we meet briefly in a flashback Joclyn had that had happened ten years prior, in the flash back Clary is attacked by a demon in a park, Joclyn uses the stele to make herself go invisible and kills the demon. She then rushes Clary to Magnus to have her memories cleared.

As Clary follows Jace and his comrades into a closed off room. She is spotted by two Circle members, Magnus goes up to them and tells them they are not allowed in his club, he uses a little magic and they take off. Clary enters the room as a fight breaks out between demons and the shadowhunters, and Clary ends up killing a demon herself. She flees the room and the club.

We are briefly introduced to Valentine who is searching for the Mortal Cup and is told by the two Circle members that Jocelyn Fray is alive and has a daughter. So he sends his men to bring them to him.

Clary returns home where her mom briefly and frantically tells her what she is, which is a Shadowhunter. Shadowhunters, being half angel half human, are put here to protect humans from demons, and downworlders.  She tells Clary she is not safe and to go find Luke. She sends Clary through a portal which lands her at the police station where Luke works as a detective, and is currently investigating a couple of bodies found drained of blood. Clary overhears Luke talking to two Circle members.  He tells them that he doesn’t know where the “Mortal Cup” is, and that they can kill Jocelyn and Clary and he wouldn’t care. A devastated Clary returns home only to find the place thrashed and her mother gone. A demon attacks her again, but Jace kills it after it wounds Clary and she faints.

She wakes up in the Institute where all shadowhunters reside to meet Isabelle Lightwood (Emeraude Toubia), a gorgeous shadow hunter,and her handsome but hostile brother Alec Lightwood (Matthew Daddario).  She gets a call from Simon who is worried sick about his beloved Clary. He tells her he tracked her phone, and is outside this old run down church. She meets him outside only to once again be attacked this time by a Circle member Jace jumps in and kills him.  In order for Simon to stop thinking Clary is crazy, she asks Jace to removed the invisibility rune. Simon tells Clary to come home, but she tells him that she doesn’t think she has one anymore and Jace tells her to stay at the Institute where she will be safe and be able to learn about being a shadowhunter.
