My SDCC 2016 Experience!
It’s almost been a month since Comic Con and I have to say I am feeling the withdrawals. It’s always an adventure at SDCC. You never know who or what you are going to see, and surprises seem to lurk around every corner.
It was a hot one this year and on our first day my cousins and I dressed as Game of Thrones characters: Sansa Stark, Melisandre, and Daenerys Targaryen. We decided we really wanted to do the Game of Thrones experience and remembered last year that the line was not terribly long on Thursday. Big mistake… never judge things based on how it was last year… We waited 5 hours to get into the GOT experience in the hot heat and I was wearing leather. I must have lost 3 pounds from sweating so much. We were waiting for so long that unfortunately one of my cousins had to be somewhere else, and left after waiting 5 hours! When we finally got in, I have to say I was underwhelmed. The Iron Throne was there, a few costumes that were worn by the actors and actresses, a case of jewelry worn in the show, a Melisandre’s flame that showed clips of the previous season, you could take a picture with Arya Stark’s sword Needle, and then the hideous Hall of Faces… Thinking back, it’s comical really. You stand in front of an Ipad and there is a light shinning up from the floor. They take your picture and this hideous picture of your face goes up on the wall in the Hall of Faces. Bad for those who always want a perfect picture, great for those who don’t give a crap. The picture is printed and also sent to your email. The one thing I loved, even though I was a little disappointed in the GOT Experience, was the people I got to meet while waiting in line. Comic con really brings people together. You bond over comics, shows, games and it truly is like a family. Also I loved meeting the different Cosplayers and even snagged some pictures with them.
Another highlight of waiting in line was right in the beginning, we saw Kristian Nairn who plays Hodor and Liam Cunningham who plays Sir. Davos! They entered the exhibit and took pictures and even posed with a couple fans.
After the Game of Thrones experience, one of the main things on our list of to do’s was to see if we could get into Hall H or as I like to call it… Hell Hall. So we could see the panel for The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones on Friday. My cousins and I were prepared to sleep outside if need be, but really were not too fond of that idea. As luck would have it,after a couple hours of waiting, we got wrist bands to get in and they told us that as long as we were back before 730 am we were golden to get into the Hell Hall. So we ventured home, but before that had a wild goose chase trying to find our uber pizza… it’s a long story.
Friday rolled around and we dressed as our normal goofy selves and got into the Hell Hall where I was introduced to a show that I am now very much interested in watching. It is a comedy show on Amazon called Con Man starring Alan Tudyk, Nathan Fillion, Mindy Sterling, Casper Van Dein and many others.
We sat through the panels and out of all of them my favorite was The Walking Dead especially when they got to a pranking segment. Norman Reedus likes to pull pranks, especially on Andrew Lincoln; they showed a video of Andrew Lincoln getting into his car turning on his AC and he was blasted with glitter confetti. So Andrew decided he would try to get Norman back by blowing glitter in his face while on the the panel. Let’s just say his plan backfired and the glitter that was meant to get in Norman’s face ended up all over Andrew’s face. It was hilarious.
We also sat through the Game of Thrones panel where we learned that Sophie Turner made everyone do shots of vodka before coming out on stage. You know Kristian Nairn felt the love from his fans, and teared up a little when the fans yelled out his character’s name, it was a sweet moment.
On my final day there, which was Sunday, we all dressed as badass women that we love. My cousins cosplayed as “Wolf Carol” from The Walking Dead, and my other cousin cosplayed Erza Scarlett from Fairy Tail. I cosplayed as Inquisitor Lavellan from Dragon Age Inquisition. I had so much fun Sunday, we took a tons of pictures and I loved when people recognized my character and called out “Inquisitor!”

However, I have to say the high light of the day was meeting with a couple other cosplayers who also dressed as Dragon Age characters and we had a mini photo shoot! Ky from Kadanaad Cosplayed as Zevran, Lin with Cosplay Amino: Sailor Tra shface was Warden Cousland and Elisa with Cosplay Amino: letsbecomestories was Bethany Hawke. These three were a delight! So much fun to take pictures of and hang out with! I really hope we can get together again and do another shoot. I was very much inspired by them to make some more Cosplay costumes! You can find all three on Instagram as well give them a follow and some likes because they are truly amazing!
Comic Con is such a great experience! It brings people together from all over the world. You make friends so easily because you’re all there for the similar reasons. My biggest take away for sure is that I made some new friends this year that I met just by bonding over our love of cosplaying and nerding out on Dragon Age, I also hung out with Lisa (instagram.com/lydiapond) a Teen Wolf Cosplayer. Follow and like her on Instagram. She’s a pretty cool lady!
Last but not least I love that comic con has really brought my cousins and I closer together, and for that I am eternally grateful. Miss you already Comic Con, hopefully will see ya next year!
