Coming September 30th, the bestselling teen novel Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs hits the theaters.  Check out the trailer below.

Directed by Tim Burton (Nightmare before Christmas, Corpse Bride), this book seemed right up his alley, and I am excited to see the adaptation.  The book had all the quirky, dark, surrealistic aspects that really fit Tim Burton’s style of directing.  I read the book several years ago, and I found that it was such a unique and interesting story.  I thought the format of the story was also very unique in the fact  that it used real pictures and formed a story around them.

The basic premise of the story is that Jacob Portman (played by Asa Butterfield) always believed that his grandfather’s stories of his time in a child’s home, Miss Peregrine’s home for peculiar children,  were all a fantastical retelling of his past.  His grandfather used to tell him him about the strange children and their strange abilities, and the nightmarish creatures that hunted them.  Jacob, thinking his grandfather had a few nuts loose, doesn’t believe a word of it.  It is only when he comes home to find his grandfather murdered by the very nightmarish creatures that his grandfather had said had been after him that Jacob begins to believe.  Jacob goes on a quest to find Miss Peregrine’s home for peculiar children, which leads him to Wales where it was said to have been in the 1940’s.  Once he gets to Wales, the real adventure begins when he finds the home and Miss Peregrine along with the peculiar children.  Oddly enough, they have not aged, and I won’t say why for spoiler purposes.

I remember I flew through this book.  It was intriguing and it had some very interesting twists and refreshing bits of storytelling especially for the teen genre.  If you have seen the trailer, I’m sure you can see that very point.  As for the trailer, here is my first impressions:

  • I love Eva Green as Miss Peregrine.  Eva Green has always been a spectacular actress, and I think she will bring a fantastic caliber to the role and the film.

  • I loved the fact that the strange children and their abilities are brought to life like the twins in the masks and the girl who has to be tied down by a rope or else she will fly away.  Seeing the strange and yet endearing peculiar children is super exciting.  Below are actual pictures from the book:

  • Just from the trailer, the cinematography looks incredible and imaginative.  The scene under the water in the boat was particularly cool to see.

Overall, I was so excited to see this trailer.  I was watching a show with my cousins who were going to fast forward over the trailer, but went back to watch it.  We didn’t know what it was for at first, but then I started recognizing some of the peculiar children like the twins and the invisible boy, and I just got super excited!  It goes to show that this trailer did a good job in exciting those that have read the book, but also intriguing those who have never heard of the book.  Now I can’t wait for September 30th!
