MEET the PATELS: Review and Q&A

cdn.indiewire

I really didn’t know what to expect when my cousin asked me to accompany her to a movie with a Q&A portion at the end. I looked up the movie called Meet the Patels and hadn’t heard of it; it didn’t have an intense cinematic trailer, or ads all over the place, or A list actors and actresses. The description read: Documentary, Comedy, Romance. To be completely honest, I didn’t even bother watching the trailer. I figured we were already on our way to go see this so why not be a little surprised.

Surprised I was when I found myself laughing for the good majority of this movie. The movie starts with Ravi Patel being interviewed by his sister Geeta Patel but in cartoon form. They use the cartoon form through out the movie which was a really unique way to break it up, and make it more interesting visually.

The synopsis of this movie is Ravi Patel is a single Indian-American pushing 30, which in his culture is very strange. He and his secret girlfriend of two years breakup, and he decides to try and find an Indian wife with the help of his parents.

The movie really showed me the beauty of Indian culture, and that every family, no matter what or who you are, have many similarities: from the silly game nights, to the aunts and uncles asking when you’re getting married and starting a family, to the loving parents that simply want you to be happy. It’s just some families are a lot larger than others.

Meet the Patels allowed audience members to come along on a quest to find love, and leave with more than the glorified glamour of ‘Hollywood’ love that we all identify with from movies. Could it be that, through our journey through love, we learn that what we were looking for was something we glanced at or were too afraid to admit aloud? Bring someone along to see Meet the Patels, and feel welcomed into their family. Check your local theaters for show times.
