Game of Thrones 6×10 Recap: The Winds of Winter
The season six season finale was a brilliant episode, and the perfect follow up to the epic episode 9. Here are our top moments of the episode.
Cersei and King’s Landing
The last we saw of Cersei trial by combat was being outlawed by her son. Things were not looking good for her as she was depending on trial by combat to get out of the predicament she was in with the High Sparrow. This episode was the day of her and Ser Loras trial by the seven. All the highest ranking lords and ladies including Kevan Lannister, Mace Tyrell, Margaery Tyrell and all the sparrows were gathered at the Sept of Baelor to witness the trials of Cersei and Loras. We see Tommen and Cersei preparing themselves. Tommen is unsettled by what he must do and what he will probably witness. We see his fragile state of mind in the beginning of the episode. As Tommen is about to leave for the Sept, he is stopped by the zombie Mountain and forced to stay in his room. Now we definitely know that Cersei is planning something.
There was nothing fragile about Cersei as she gets ready, and dons what looks like a black war dress. While she is preparing herself and looking out the window of the Red Keep at the Sept of Baelor, several things are happening elsewhere. Ser Loras Tyrell is brought forward for his trial. Loras, bedraggled and defeated, decides to forego the trial and confess his sins. He further adds that he will forsake his title and name to become a sparrow himself. For this, his life is spared and he has the mark of the sparrows etched on his forehead. Margaery is stunned by this painful addition of the mark on her brother, but not by the outcome as it seems she made a deal with the High Sparrow to spare her brother.
Meanwhile, we go to another part of the city were the Grand Meister Pycelle is finishing up with his prostitute. He gets a message to meet Tommen in a secret meeting. Pycelle goes to this meeting and finds himself face to face with Qyburn instead. Qyburn’s little birds are with him in the room, and they all pull out knives. We watch in horror as Pycelle is stabbed to death by Qyburn’s little birds.
While this is happening, the lords and ladies are waiting for Cersei in the Sept of Baelor. The High Sparrow sends Lancel to drag Cersei out of the Red Keep. As he is going to get Cersei, he sees a child running away from the Sept, presumably another one of Qyburn’s little birds. This same thought must have crossed Lancel’s mind or he thought something was suspicious because he chases after the little boy.
In the Sept, Margaery is starting to get worried as she is the first to realize that both Tommen and Cersei are not in the Sept. She puts two and two together, and knows that something is terribly wrong to which she tells the High Sparrow this. Meanwhile, Lancel follows the little boy into tunnels under the city. He finds a room full of wild fire and sees puddles of wild fire on the floor with lit candles in them. The little boy stabs Lancel in the back and disables him. Lancel sees the danger in front of him and he struggles to crawl towards the candles as the flames get closer and closer to the wild fire puddle that is near all the barrels.
Margaery is getting more and more frantic as she really knows something is wrong. She tells everyone to get out of the Sept and tries to take her brother out herself. Due to the High Sparrows foolish pride, he has his men block everyone’s exit out of the building as panic starts to sweep through the people. Why he did this we don’t know. Margaery tells him something is wrong and he won’t listen.
Lancel gets to the puddle and goes to blow the candle out, but it is too late. The flame reaches the puddle, ignites the wild fire and the barrels. The wild fire explosion rips up through the Sept of Baelor killing everyone inside and those in the nearby streets. Tommen watches from his window in horror as the Sept explodes. Cersei watches from her window with a smile of triumph.
Cersei then takes the Mountain away from her son to hunt down the Septa who tormented her. This is where we think she let her pride get the best of her and she loses something truly dear. Instead of staying with her fragile and distraught son, who just witnessed his beloved wife’s fiery death, Cersei hunts torments and taunts a chained up Septa. She leaves the zombie Mountain with her, and we can only imagine the horrible things he is doing to the Septa.
Tommen, too full of despair, takes his own life by jumping out the window. If Cersei had stayed with her son and comforted him, even if just for one day, he would still be alive. His death is fully on her in our opinion.
Upon the death of her son and all the legitimate heirs for the throne in King’s Landing, Cersei is the last one standing. Jaime arrives back to Kings Landing just as Cersei is crowned Queen of the Iron Throne. Things are going to go from bad to way worse, in our opinion, with a cold hearted Cersei with nothing to lose on the throne.
Jon Snow and Winterfell
The battle is won and Jon and Sansa are finally back safe in their home. They have a touching moment between them where Sansa apologizes for not telling Jon about the Knights of the Vail. He forgives her and tells her that from this point forward they have to trust each other.
All the leaders of the Northern families are to meet at Winterfell. Before the meeting, Ser Davos confronts Melisandre in the death of Shireen. He wants her dead, but Jon spares her. He tells her that she must never come back north. Melisandre leaves Winterfell. What will this mean for the future? We shall have to see. Do we think Melisandre’s part in this story is over? Probably not.
Soon after, the meeting begins. All the Northern families are in the Great Hall with Jon Snow and Sansa seated at the head table. They are dubious as to whether they can rally behind Jon and call him the King of the North (as it seems they have no intention of being loyal to the Iron Throne). It is only when the spunky ten-year-old lady, Lyanna Mormount of Bear island stands up and gives her speech that things take a turn. Lyanna shames those who did not fight at Jon’s side like the Glovers and the Manderly’s reminding them of all the wrong that was done to them by the Boltons and the Freys. She tells them that her king is Jon and that the King of the North can only be a Stark.
Her speech puts heart into the men of the hall who see that she has more honor and loyalty than the lot of them. In a rousing scene, they proclaim Jon King of the North, and it is a part that fans have been waiting to see for a long time. Hopefully this time the King of the North moniker will not lead to another awful event like the Red Wedding. Hopefully, it will lead to Jon rallying the North when they desperately need it the most.
Bran and Meera
Bran and Meera’s scene was a small one this episode, but it was probably one of the most important parts of this episode due to the information that is revealed. Last we saw of Bran and Meera, they were rescued by half white walker Benjen Stark, Bran’s uncle. In this episode, Benjen gets them to the wall. He explains to Bran that he can’t go with them beyond the wall because the wall is made of magic. So long as the wall stands, the White Walkers can’t get through it. It also means neither can he.
Benjen bids them farewell, and leaves them. He says that he is going to fight the Night King as long as he can. It will be interesting to see what will become of Benjen Stark. Benjen leaves them next to large weirwood. Bran notices a face of man in the tree and touches it. He is immediately put into a trance and his mind is transported back to the past.
And where does he go? Back to the Tower of Joy scene we saw back in episode three when a young Ned Stark takes on Ser Arthur Dayne. It takes place just after young Ned has killed Bran follows his father.
They come to a room at the top of the tower where a bloody and near death Lyanna Stark has just given birth to a baby boy. In a heartbreaking scene, Lyanna makes Ned promise to protect her son and tell no one who is parents are. Fans have been speculating for ages now that Jon’s real parents are Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, which would give Jon a legitimate claim to the Iron Throne. Now it seems that this is now going to be more than just speculation for why would Lyanna ask Ned to hide her son’s true identity? The only reason why she would ask that is that she knew that, even if Jon was her son, Robert Baratheon would have had Jon killed because he was also Rhaegar Targaryen’s son. Jon would have had a target on his back since the day he was born. So Ned made up a story that Jon was his illegitimate son.
Ned willingly sacrificed his honor and possibly his new marriage with his wife for this great secret. It would also explain why Ned was so adamant in the first season of exposing Cersei’s lie and telling everyone that Joffrey and his siblings were bastards as well. Ned knew he had the true heir to the throne in his household. Now it wasn’t said straight out who Jon’s parents were, but the theory that Jon is really Lyanna and Rhaegar’s son makes so much sense. What is also interesting is that Bran sees all of this. With Ned, Lyanna, Rhaegar and everyone who knew the truth dead, Bran now holds the most important secret of all in his hands.
Arya the assassin
Arya’s part in this episode was extraordinarily epic, and we finally get to see some retribution come down on Walder Frey’s head. Walder Frey is holding another banquet this time as a tribute to the union of House Lannister and House Frey. Jaime, who is there with Bronn, is not overly pleased with Walder’s attitude and flat out tells him that the only reason why they have Riverrun was because of the Lannisters. He also asked if they had to keep saving the Freys, why should they be in alliance with them? Jaime makes a legitimate statement as all the hard work has been done by the Lannisters and not the Freys.
Jaime then has a moment with Bronn. Bronn notices that all the ladies love to look at Jaime. He especially notices a pretty serving girl who is eyeing Jaime. Jaime says he is not interested and distracts Bronn by calling over to girls to get them to talk to Bronn. Jaime then leaves the hall and leaves Riverrun to get back to King’s Landing and Cersei.
This serving girl is not only eyeing Jaime. Walter Frey is alone in the throne room eating his dinner and he is being served by the same girl. The lewd Walder smacks her behind and then asks where his sons are. The serving girl puts a pie in front of him and then says “Your sons are already here.” He looks around and says he doesn’t see them to which she repeats that his sons are already in the room.
Walder Frey looks down at the pie and peels back the top layer to find an ear. And that is when Arya whips off the face of the serving girl. We are as stunned as Walder is and cheering inside as she explains how it was hard for her to cut up Walder’s sons. She then tells him that she is Arya Stark and she wants her smiling face to be the last thing he sees before he dies. She then slits his throat.
For many fans, this was a long time coming. We have been wanting to see some good retribution fall on Walder since the Red Wedding and we got more than we wished for with Arya doing the deed. One thing that is worrisome, which is something the producers brought up, is how this will affect Arya. She didn’t just murder someone. She fed this man his own sons.
There are so many possibilities now for her. Does she go to Winterfell to meet up with her family? Does she follow Jaime to kill more people on her list? And what will happen to Riverrun? There is sure to be some chaos in the wake of this murder and we will have to wait a whole year to find out what will happen here.
Daenerys Targaryen
Daenerys’s part in this episode is something we as fans have been waiting to see for six seasons. It starts with Daenerys and Daario. She wants him to stay in Meereen and govern it until the city can elect its own government. She is doing this because a lover will only complicate things when she gets to Westeros. Daenerys knows that there is a big possibility that she will have to marry to win Westeros over with minimal bloodshed. This scene was sad, but a good ending. It shows that she is not only shrewd, but just as well. She will not leave Meereen without some form of government.
The next meeting she has is with Tyrion and we think this is probably one of the most touching parts of this episodes. She recognizes Tyrion’s intelligence and his loyalty by naming him the hand of the Queen. Tyrion has been the hand before, but never because he was chosen as hand. Daenerys gave him the validation that he has been waiting for all his life and we as fans have been waiting to see for six seasons. Now, not only will he be loyal to her more than ever, but Tyrion knows all the major players in Westeros. His advice will be critical for Daenerys once she reaches Westeros.
Daenerys’s part and the finale ends with her fleet, and her dragons sailing to Westeros. She is finally going home and we can not wait to see what will happen next.
Notable moments
-Samwell and Gilly make it to Citadel and Samwell is accepted into the Citadel despite some hiccups. The library of the Citadel is absolutely beautiful.
-Olenna Tyrell is furious with the Lannisters and plots revenge. She seeks out another house, the Martells, to help her with her revenge. The Martells and the Tyrells have historically been enemies, but with new people in power there seems to be an opportunity for an alliance. In this scene, Varys appears with the Martells and we know now what allies he has set up for Daenerys in Westeros. This will be interesting to see how this pans out as Daenerys is not fond of those who kill children and Ellaria and the Sand Snakes have killed two.
