E3 has come and gone, but there were some really exciting games that piqued my interest even more than they did before. Here are my top games that came out of E3 2019.
Death Stranding
Platform: Playstation 4
Death Stranding has always been on my radar. I love some of the actors that are voice acting for the game (Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen) and I have found the concept of this game to be intriguing. Check out the trailer below:
This game is so strange, but I like it. It looks like it will have a very interesting take on life and death and the bridge between the two. I like how out of the box this story seems to be. Directed by Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear Solid), this looks like this could be a masterful exploration of life in a dystopian setting. I’m very curious to explore this world and story and the graphics look amazing.
At E3, they gave a little sneak peek at the mechanics of how the game will play and I want to know more. It looks to be a stealth and survival game with moments of going first person. What I found really interesting with that trailer is the mention of going to Hades. Do you really get to go to Hades? Is the rain a metaphor for the River Styx? I liked how it looks like you can explore past events like battles in famous wars throughout history which would be a hot spot for bridges between life and death. And I like how this is an open world.
Well it looks like I won’t have to wait long to explore that world. Death Stranding is set to be released on November 8 2019 on Playstation 4.
Final Fantasy VII Remake
Fans of the classic Final Fantasy game have been waiting anxiously for new footage and a release date after seeing a trailer for the remake all the way back at E3 2015. Well luckily for fans, new footage was dropped at E3 2019. Check out the Square Enix presentation at E3:
Now I personally have not played the original game (though it is high on my list to do so) and I have seen bits and pieces of Advent Children. I know enough about the story and the major twists in it to be excited for the remake, but I did have my reservations about it as well.
I think the biggest original reservation was centered around combat. The original Final Fantasy VII employs classic turn base combat, which in this day and age, is much slower than people are used to in modern games. Other than modern games like Persona 5, which uses turn base, most games use active combat.
Well my reservations are quelled after watching this demo as I am very intrigued with the new combat system. It looks like it will be a true hybrid of classic turn base combat mixed with the more active, fast paced combat we got in Final Fantasy XV. This new combat will be using a method that is similar to the wait mode in FFXV which slows down time and allows you to make decisions much like a turn base. It will also allow you to switch smoothly between characters which is nice. The combat in the demo did look smooth and really fun to play, and the bosses look like they will be a challenge which is nice. There will definitely be a lot of moving parts to think about when it comes to combat, but that is not necessarily a bad thing.
The other reservation I was having was how the game is going to be coming out. The game will be broken up into multiple parts, part one being entirely in Midgard. Now while this may be good as it may allow the developers to really expand the FFVII universe and story, it could also be really bad. How much will be covered in part one? Will people be able to have free reign to explore Midgard or will it be more of a linear story progression?
But the biggest question most fans have is how long will we have to wait in between installments and how many installments will there be? According to Newsweek, Yoshinori Kitase (producer of FFVII remake) does not know how many installments they will have. (1) Suffice to say that this is concerning for fans as making games like this can take years. If they have several installments with years in between each one (and each one costing around $60 on release), this is a bit problematic. And it is concerning that one of the main producers of this game does not know how many parts it will have as in they may not have a mapped out game plan.
Now this presentation definitely quelled most of my reservations I originally had for the game (aside from not knowing how many installments there will be), but there are still some worries on just how long of a process this may become.
Final Fantasy VII remake is set to release first on March 3, 2020 on Playstation 4.

The highly anticipated CD Projekt Red game, Cyberpunk 2077, has fans super excited. E3 2019 pumped that excitement up with the introduction of Keanu Reeves who will be in the game as Johnny Silverhand as well as the announcement for the release date. Check out the full presentation below:
Now it’s not a very long presentation, but the game still looks amazing graphically. Paying homage to predecessors like Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell, this game looks fantastically dark and gritty.
With CD Projekt Red at the helm (Witcher 3), the game is already promising. It looks like the game play will be first person, and an open world with different classes you can dive into. You play as a mercenary named V who will be customizable as well. There looks to be quests you can get from “fixers” and it looks like there will be different endings for choices made. Intrigued? I certainly am.
Cyberpunk 2077 is set to release April 16 2020 on Xbox One, PS4, PC.
