Cosplay Friday Highlight: Moderatelyokaycosplay

Here at Bgeekyblog we have grown to appreciate the community of cosplay. There is something special about the cosplaying community that deserves more recognition for their craft. Countless hours and hard work go into the details of bringing to life beloved characters. Your gender, physical appearance or age should never hinder you from your passion to cosplay. Cosplay is for everyone.  With that ideal, we are excited to expand our highlights to the cosplay community.  We are excited to be highlighting Moderatelyokaycosplay!

1.) What sparked your interest in cosplay?

I wanted to dress up as a character from League of Legends, but it was nowhere near Halloween, and a friend told me about conventions and cosplay and it blew my mind that people dressed up year-round.  It was the coolest thing to me.  I only really knew of San Diego Comic-Con, but I knew nothing about cosplay.  So I was super into the concept of it from the start.

2.) What has been your favorite character to cosplay?

I would have to say Genos from One Punch Man.  I think robot arms are really cool.

3.) What has been the most difficult cosplay for you and why?

To make?  Probably Jhin from League of Legends.  It’s this super asymmetrical design and it was a nightmare to create.

4.) If you could reenact any scene in cosplay from any fandom, what would it be?

That’s a great question. I’ve never thought of that actually.  Probably Cloud vs. Sephiroth from the FFVII: Advent Children movie.  I dunno how you’d do it, but if you could it would be amazing.

5.) You cosplay a lot of different fandoms.  Which character (if any) would you say you relate to the most and why?

Oh, Noctis for sure.  He just wants to sleep and hang out with his friends and play video games.  And he also hates vegetables.  I relate to all of those things.

6.) If you could hang out with any character from any fandom, which character would you like to hang out with and why?

Probably Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop.  He’s like the coolest guy ever.  Maybe he could teach me how to be cool.

7.) You’ve been to quite a few conventions in cosplay.  What has been your most memorable or funniest convention moment?

I was guesting at the same convention as Dan Slott who is the current writer for Amazing Spider-Man and a lot of other Marvel comics. I’m sitting in the green room eating lunch and he walks up and says “So this is like high school where I don’t know anyone so I’m going to sit with you because you probably don’t know who I am” and I’m like “No way, I know who you are, you wrote Superior Spider-Man and it’s one of my all time favorite comics!”  But not in like a…you know a weird way?  It sounds weird when I write it out, but it was super casual.  Anyway, he sat with me for about an hour and talked about comic books, movies, cons, etc.  Absolutely one of the nicest, most genuine people I’ve ever had a conversation with.  It was super memorable for me because like, it’s the guy who writes Spider-Man!

8.) You make a lot of your own cosplay.  What is the hardest part of making something from scratch and what advice would you give to those who want to make their own cosplay?

I think the hardest part for me of making something from scratch has always been looking at a 2D/3D model, patterning it into 2D in the real world, and then making that into a 3D object.  The conceptualization part of it.  It’s like “Okay I’m gonna make this imaginary thing into flat shapes and then make those shapes into armor/clothes/whatever”  It’s such a crazy concept.

My advice to people who want to make their own cosplay is look up tutorials.  I’ve learned everything I know because someone else learned it first, to put it simply.  Wanna learn something?  Like, for example, foam armor.  Just search “Foam armor tutorial” on YouTube and them BAM a ton of videos will pop up.  Then you watch all of them that you can handle.  And you absorb all this information and you’re a cosplay powerhouse.  I see people’s first cosplays nowadays and I’m like “That’s your first???  I’m not even that good and I’ve done this for five years!”  There’s so many good resources available completely free.  It’s amazing.

9.) It is very safe to say that you like Final Fantasy XV.  If you could visit any place in the game in reality, where would you go?  And which of Noctis’s friends would you bring along for the adventure?

That’s a tough question.  I’d probably bring Ignis, because he’s like…the most interesting of the group, he probably knows a lot.  I feel like maybe bringing Gladio because he probably knows how to party?  It’s a tough call.  I’d probably want to visit Altissia though.  It looks gorgeous.

10.) Cosplaying, going to conventions, managing your store envy, and your Patreon can get tricky time wise.  What is the hardest part about managing all of this?

I think the hardest part is just making new stuff consistently.  You could make this big project and it’s done and you’re super proud of it and everyone’s stoked on it, but then a week later you’re like “Okay what am I doing next?”  Keeping it fresh.  That’s the hardest part for me at least.  Always gotta be doing something new or I don’t feel like I’m pushing myself.  My patrons, who are the most wonderful and supportive group I’ve ever met, always tell me I need to take a vacation and I’m like, “I travel all the time!”  Then they get mad at me and are like “No John, a REAL vacation.” God bless them.  I’m gonna take this moment to shout out to them and tell them I love them because I wouldn’t be here without them and their support.

11.) What advice would you give to people who are just starting out or getting back into cosplay?

You do you!  Don’t let anyone tell you how to think or how to feel.  At the end of the day, stay true to yourself and what you‘re doing.  Cosplay isn’t easy.  You‘re doing this amazing thing by yourself, actually embodying characters you love and crafting these amazing costumes that Hollywood and other places use entire TEAMS to make, and that’s so awesome.  If anyone tries to tell you you‘re doing it wrong, or tells you the reasons you‘re doing it are wrong, don’t listen to them.  Do it for you!  Stay above the ignorance and people who are negative toward you and what you’re doing.  Unabashedly support your fellow cosplayers.  Help people where you can.  Be excellent to one another!
