American Horror Story: Chapter 1 Reveals
American Horror Story reigned terror over Wednesday night with their chilling debut and reveal of the theme for Season 6. Fans of the hit series have been teased long enough and were rewarded by the confirmation that Season 6 will be about The Roanoke Colony. The fan favorite theme was welcomed with excitement on social media and fans are in for a “Roanoke Nightmare”. FX did promise that the theme was hinted all along and so far we saw those hints play out from multiply episodes in chapter 1.
Season 6 has a different format from previous seasons in that we see the real life encounters play out with interview commentary. The commentary is reminiscent of those interviews seen from Ghost Story or True Life Encounter docuseries. The reenactors are seemingly low end actors looking to make some quick money by retelling the story of the mixed racial couple The Millers.
Shelby Miller:
Shelby Miller (portrayed by series regulars Lily Rabe and reenacted by Sarah Paulson) is a Yogi and gluten-free stay at home wife. Shelby suffers a miscarriage after an incident that nearly killed her husband, Matt Miller (Cuba Gooding Jr.). She agrees to leave the city of L.A to start a new life. They purchase a farmhouse for $40,000 that they believed was their dream home. Shelby starts to discover that the home may be haunted.
Witnessing teeth falling like hail from the sky, two girls roaming the hallway (the scene paying homage to The Shining). Shortly after these encounters she is nearly drowned in the hot tub. She claims to have seen people in old fashion clothing with pitchforks. After being locked in the basement, she flees the home and is terrified for her life. However, she is run off the road when she hits a ghostly woman (Kathy Bates).
Matt Miller:
Matt Miller (Matt Miller is reenacted by Cuba Gooding Jr. and Andre Holland) is a pharmaceutical rep that met Shelby during her Yoga class that he had won at a work raffle. After moving with his wife to L.A, he is brutally attacked as part of a gang initiation. The Millers move away from the city to North Carolina where his family grew up.
Shortly after purchasing the home, the couple begin to have incidents around the farmhouse. From the terrifying squeals in the middle of the night, loud thudding knocks on the door to dead pig carcasses, Matt believes that the hillbillies from the auction were trying to scare them out of the home by racial vandalism.
After the recent events that have taken place in their new home. Matt sets up cameras around the property hoping to catch the hillbillies that could be terrorizing his wife. While at work, he is alerted by the motion picture cameras and watches people with pitchforks making their way to the home.
Lee
Lee is the sister of Matt Miller and reluctant fan of Shelby. She is called out to the farmhouse by Matt after the drowning incident to watch over Shelby. Lee is an ex cop that was released after she became addicted to pain killers from being shot on the job. Lee is reenacted by Angela Basset and portrayed by Adina Porter. After an argument the two find themselves needing one another after they were locked in the basement. Lee is a independent woman and from what we gather she will be someone to never underestimate, so watch out ghostly mob!
Fun Facts:
The teeth scene, the pitchfork and the twig people (husk creatures) were hints from the teasers, which were depicted in the Chapter 1.
