AHS: The Nightmare Continues
American Horror Story continues its theme of The Roanoke Nightmare giving us a chilling episode filled with murder, ghostly children and human sacrifices. Fans of the hit series even got an extra treat with the “Murder House” undertones in the episode. Here are our favorite moments from Chapter 2 of tonight’s episode.
1. Murder Sisters
American Horror Story writers and producers have been known to add real life serial killers into their series. Season 6 is nothing different with the introduction of nurses Bridget and Miranda (seen previously wandering the hall in episode 1). Bridget and Miranda were two sisters with a very cynical approach to assisting the elderly. After the duo was linked to the rise of unknown deaths from their previous employer, they fled to the farmhouse (now owned by the Millers) to start their own senior assisted living facility.
The sisters were selective on who they chose for their services, accepting patients that would spell “MURDER” well, MURDE when they mysteriously disappeared. The coverup of their crimes were repainted over and later covered up by wallpaper.
That is until an old homemade movie divulges their dirty secret filmed by Dr. Elias Cunningham (Denis O’Hare). Dr. Cunningham, in the video, talks about the murders in the house and the strange occurrences in the home. He states that the home is responsible for their disappearance, claiming that they were taken by something more evil, and then he too was taken.
The disturbed Millers then rush to the dinning hall where Matt Miller (Cuba Gooding Jr.) peels away the wallpaper. He reveals the word MURDE in blood on the walls where he had seen Margaret (deceased client) murdered by the sisters in a vision.
The more disturbing part is that the characters of Bridget and Miranda are based off of the real life American Serial Killers, Gwendolyn Graham and Kathy Wood. These ex-lovers killed five elderly women in Walker, Michigan in the 1980s. The lovers committed their crimes at Alpine Manor, a skilled nursing home, where they worked as nurses and smothered elderly patients as part of a “love bond.”
Kathy Wood admitted that they selected their victims as a game, based on the initials of their first names to spell out M-U-R-D-E-R. When they discovered the spelling was hard to accomplish, the couple began to call the murders “day”, a reference to the poem written by the two “I will love you forever and a day.” The two were tried for their crimes years later. Graham was sentenced to life in prison and Wood will be released on June 6, 2021.
Ghost Child
Ryan Murphy kept his promise about the incorporation of children in this season. Flora, the daughter of Lee (Angela Bassett), is brought over to the farmhouse for a visit. Her mother quickly learns that Flora has a new friend called Priscilla. Flora later describes Priscilla as a little girl that wears a bonnet and all she wants is the blood to stop. Lee plays things off, claiming her daughter’s actions are for attention because she was not present in her life since the incident.
Flora is later found in a small closet by her parents in which they believed was their daughter’s creative way of hide and go seek. When Flora is found, she is confused and upset that Priscilla left just as she was offering her favorite doll to her. She tells her parents that she needed to offer Priscilla the doll so they would not kill them and save her for last. Mason (Flora’s father) reacted like any parent would by quickly removing Flora from the home.
A distraught Lee has other plans when she kidnaps her daughter, bringing her back to the farmhouse. While The Millers try to talk some sense into Lee, Flora is distracted by Priscilla outside the window in which she follows. Lee, after realizing her lack of judgement, goes back to find her daughter. When she arrives, her daughter is no where to be found until the front door opens on its own. This leads her outside where she discovers Flora’s yellow coat hanging up high in the trees. The ending left us wondering about Flora and slightly intrigued to learn just who Priscilla is.
