AHS 8×06 Breakdown: “Return to Murder House”

The episode avid fans had been waiting for is finally here. Satisfying viewers with the return to the infamous Murder House and some familar faces.

The episode picks up quickly with Madison Montgomery (Emma Roberts) and Behold Chanblis (Billy Porter) purchasing Murder House. Unsure necessarily their task the two quickly come to the assumption that the answers lie in Murder House’s ghostly inhabitants. After performing a spell they are able to see all the ghostly tenants in some peculiar states.

But the key encounters they would have would be with Constance Langdon (Jessica Lange), Ben Harmon (Dylan McDermott), and Vivien Harmon (Connie Britton) as they learn about Michael Langdon’s unredeemable nature. However, Constance was not going to spill about her grandson without some form of request. The request for Moira O’Hara to be removed from the home forever.

Madison believes that her third chance at life is an opportunity to do good. So she decides to have Behold dig up Moira’s remains in order to lay Moira to rest in a place of her choosing.  Moira request that her remains be buried with her mother and the two are reunited in the afterlife.

After fulfilling Constance’s request, she tells the story of raising Michael Langdon from infancy and youth, until he suddenly aged 10 years. One to never fear for her life, Constance soon grew uneasy after she awoke to Michael strangling her. Warning Constance, “You don’t tell me what to do anymore!”

Constance believed she was meant to raise the monsters. However, after the discovery of the dead Priest after a sacred intervention, Constance realized that her own life did not matter anymore and she no longer served a purpose to Michael. So she took her death into her own hands by ending her life inside Murder House to be reunited with her family.

Michael discovers Constance’s dead body and is overcome with grief and anger after Ben informs him that his grandmother does not wish to be seen by him. After death, Constance cut off all ties to Michael along with his father Tate Langdon. The father and son reunion was not a welcoming one as Tate denounces Michael as his son. Claiming that Michael was created by something else, “Even I couldn’t have created something as monstrous,as evil, as you!” That something we learned after a revelation from Vivien was, in fact, The Devil and that Tate was simply the vessel.

My Favorite Parts of the Episode

I enjoyed the President of the Tate and Violet ship club, Madison Montgomery working her magic on these two. Tate and Violet have been living in teenage angst for years with their unresolved issues since Murder House was their own versions of hell. Playing cupid Madison uses her witchy powers to share with Violet that Tate saved her mother’s life when Michael attempted to destroy her soul after she tried to kill him. Violet seeing the change in Tate allows herself to forgive him and the two get their happy ending in Murder House.

Ms. Meade makes her introduction as one of the Cardinals of the Black Pope of Satan. However, her loyalty may be in question during the sacrifice ritual for Michael and begins to feel regret for her hand in the death of the young girl. Perhaps this will play out in the remaining episodes as we learn Ms. Meade’s death and “reboot” into her robotic counterpart.

I also liked the interactions with Michael Langdon and Ben. Ben desperately believes he can save Michael and bring out the good in him. However, after witnessing Michael killing the new tenants than later destroying their souls, Ben realizes that Michael has no redemption or good within him. He leaves Michael with parting last words: “I never could have helped you. It was foolish to try.”
