Siren Episode 1×03: A Siren Out Of Water

Ben and Maddie try to learn more about Sirens with the help of Ryn. However, their research takes a halt when their specimen goes missing.

Helen warns that things will end up badly if Ben and Maddie don’t reconnect Ryn with her sister. Helen further warns Ben that the more that he denies what his ancestors had done to the sirens, the more history will repeat itself. Ben goes against Helen’s warnings and coaxes Ryn to come back to the research center so he can learn more about her species.

Ben and Maddie conduct tests on Ryn, all while documenting with a camcorder. While we get that the recording is for “research,” it is inevitable that the camcorder is going to fall into the wrong hands to expose Ryn as a Siren. Especially with the mysterious government agency that is holding Ryn’s sister is planning to make a visit to The Bristol Cove Marine Research Center. There are even more threats to Ryn with Maddie’s father trying to arrest her for murder and let’s not forget the Pownall family.

During Ben and Maddie’s research interrogation, Ryn explains that changing into human form is painful. She later shows Ben her true nature when he asked Ryn about the night she attacked him. The Siren simply states, “In water, we fight. I kill or you kill.” Ryn divulges that there are many Sirens in the ocean and that the desire to land on Bristol Cove is not a high priority. Maddie shares with Ryn her own lesson about humans. That there are good and bad people out there and Ryn must be able to trust good people to protect her from those that want to hurt her.

OtherThoughts and Highlights

  • We learn that the spinal fluid that was extracted from the other siren cured a paralyzed lab rate. Surely Sirens will be hunted down for their healing properties.
  • Ryn nearly lures Ben and Maddie into a kiss. Ryn has been able to attract both Maddie and Ben under her Siren song which can lead to an interesting love triangle.
  • Ben raised flags with his family when he asked about the Pownall folklore. Will Ben’s prodding reveal a darker past into his family history or more questions about their role in Bristol Cove?
  • Apparently pool water does not turn Sirens into mermaids. Ryn explains to Maddie that she didn’t change because the water was not her own (ocean water). There goes that water ploy that has been used in the various movie and television shows.
