Cosplay Friday Highlight:

Here at Bgeekyblog we have grown to appreciate the community of cosplay. There is something special about the cosplaying community that deserves more recognition for their craft. Countless hours and hard work go into the details of bringing to life beloved characters. Your gender, physical appearance or age should never hinder you from your passion to cosplay. Cosplay is for everyone.  With that ideal, we are excited to expand out highlights to the cosplay community.  We are pleased to highlight Dennis.

1.) What sparked your interest in cosplay?
I always wanted to have a Starfleet uniform or be one of the “Blackhawks” when I was a kid but it took getting married to be able to actually make it possible to create those outfits and to share the experience with someone.

2.) What has been your favorite character to cosplay?
A difficult question to answer since the term “cosplay” traditionally means to portray a character as depicted in film, TV or comics but my favorite character is the Pirate Cap’n Syn mainly because everyone should want to play Pirate at some time. The other one that follows quite closely is the Klingon Fleet Admiral K’Han Den. Since these are characters that are based in some genre but are not based on something that has been seen it is not exactly cosplay but more play acting and makes creativity in acting more fun.

3.) What would be your dream cosplay?
A cosplay that would allow me to recreate some of the actual moves of the character, for example being Spiderman and actually doing some wall crawling.

4.) What has been the most difficult cosplay for you and why?
The War Doctor has been the most difficult based on a character that was only seen once with very little to base the play on. However, it has been fortunate that Big Finish Productions has created three audio dramas based on the character to help flesh out the ability to play the character.

5.) If you could reenact any scene in cosplay from any fandom, what would it be?
It would be fun to reenact the sequence of three Doctors from the 50th Anniversary as they walk from the painting to U.N.I.T. HQ in the Black Archives.

6.) You cosplay a lot of different fandoms.  Which character (if any) would you say you relate to the most and why?
The Pirate I can relate to the sense of adventure coupled with the rebellious nature.  With the Klingon I can relate to the sense of honor, with the villainous Doc Synchronous the thrill of plotting and planning a cunning plan and with the War Doctor the sense of doing what must be done no matter what the outcome will bring but in the hopes that in the end you will be able to be what you desire to regain.

7.) If you could hang out with any character from any fandom, which character would you like to hang out with and why?
Really tough because when you look at the characters they live lives that are complicated and busy so I will choose Alf.  Gordon Shumway, otherwise known as Alf, would be fun to talk to though he is difficult to control like an overly excited child but it would be different. If not him Kermit the Frog will do, a leader with the difficulties of trying too hard to still be a nice guy…er Frog.

8.) You’ve been to a few conventions in cosplay.  What has been your most memorable convention moment?
This would be the 2016 San Diego Comic Con where I was dressed as the War Doctor one day. I was down on the dealer floor when someone tapped me on the shoulder and asked if he could have his picture taken with me. I turned and saw that he was Steven Moffett. He had said my costume was bang on so I said yes to the photo.

9.) What advice would you give to people who are just starting out or getting back into cosplay?
Plan out your outfit and have a great backstory that you can play with. This is your dream, this is your recreation so whatever you choose to design, wear and perform in do it for your enjoyment. If people love what you have done then share the excitement with them.  If there are critics who do not like what you did do not let them ruin your fun.

10.) If you could create any character your choice what would they be and what genre would they fit into?
Right now it is probably a mashup of genres with recognizable characters, but still within the SciFi/Fantasy realm.
Thank you Dennis for the interview.  Check him out in social media and check out his son’s cosplay article here.
