10 Cloverfield Lane
I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect when I went to see 10 Cloverfield Lane. I had seen only two previews for it and the main reason I wanted to see it was because it left me wondering, what the hell is this going to be about? So I entered the theater with the lowest of expectations, that way I wouldn’t be so disappointed when it sucked. Boy was I wrong! This movie was fantastic!I’m going to just touch on the story, because I don’t want to give too much away. The synopsis is, Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is running away after getting in an argument with her Fiancé Ben and winds up getting in a car accident. When she awakes she finds herself underground, undressed, an I.V in her arm, and chained to a pipe (as if that wasn’t scary enough). Then you are introduced to Howard (John Goodman), the man who brought Michelle to his bomb shelter, who truly believes the night that Michelle got in the accident, America was attacked by either North Korea, Al-qaeda, or the most logical answer Aliens (probably couldn’t catch my sarcasm). She assumes Howard is just some crazed psycho-path until she meets Emmett (John Gallagher Jr.). He tells her that he saw the explosion and knew of Howard’s shelter because he helped him build it. This leaves you pondering the questions are both men crazy and in this together? Was there really an attack on American soil? Is Howard keeping both of them hostage for psychotic reasons? Or is Michelle in so much distress that she is imagining all of this?
There were times I was literally on the edge of my seat and most likely cutting off circulation to my best friends arm. To me the movie was balanced with just the right amount of gore (thank goodness, it is so often overdone), and the perfect amount of mystery and suspense. Also the acting was so well done and believable I still get goosebumps when I think back to the movie.John Goodman did such a phenomenal job with his ‘Easter Egg’ of a character! His character left you questioning so many different things throughout the entire movie. Sending chills down your spine with a simple look.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead did a fantastic job, playing Michelle. Going from a freaked out nervous wreck to a detective then transformed into such a survivor.
John Gallagher Jr. was perfect for Emmett. His quirky character added a little more life to the story and even some comic relief to such an intense and dark story.
In my own personal opinion I would give this a 9 out of 10; Only because I wanted more (I know, I know, a movie can only be so long). Also, I understood everything that happened even though the story left certain things some what unanswered. I believe the director and screen writers wanted you to solve some of the mysteries on your own, which I did, but am not entirely sure every audience member will.
If you love mysteries, dramas and horror movies, I definitely recommend you to go and see 10 Cloverfield Lane in theaters now!
